We Love Beginners!

Piano LabI am a part of a large group of piano teachers online, most of which are seemingly great people who love music and teaching (I mean, let’s be real, its Facebook).  But I do see many that gripe or complain about having so many beginner students and asking questions like, why can’t I get I get a stellar student that wants to work on Chopin or Tchaikovsky?! I also see local studios specializing in or specifically targeting advanced students. We love advanced students, and with teachers with multiple masters degrees, a doctorate, symphony experience, experience in various professional and military bands, recording credentials, and Berklee College of Music training, we are here for that! You want to learn how to sing in different languages? We are here for you! Want to learn advanced reharmonization techniques?  Super Locrian or Egyptian minor scales?  Maybe you want to learn advanced techniques for violin? We’ve got you covered!

Here’s the thing though, we have many advanced students working on deep, interesting, and difficult music. In fact, just the other day I taught a few students the Locrian 13 mode—which I can almost guarantee many excellent musicians have neither heard of nor know, and those students are also working on Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. But guess what? They also started with us as beginners at 6 and 8 years old.

We also do have extremely capable students that reach out to us coming from other teachers in the community that want what we can give them; advanced musical understanding, techniques, skill sets, and a personal mentor that will work with them in a relational, fun, and engaging way—and we love that too!

But you know what, we LOVE beginners! Why? Because beginners come with a sense of adventure, they come without any bad habits, they come with a blank slate!
