Practicing on a Holiday Break

Holiday break is a great time to take a step back, breathe, rest, and relax. I would encourage all music students to at least take 3-5 days off to just sort of unplug rest, and slow down. But music students and musicians, much like athletes, should generally not take much more time off in a row than that completely. After an initial rest period, I would challenge you to come up with a schedule for your practice over the break.

3/4 Time

I like to suggest students go home and listen to some music in 3 to get the feel for it, and this can be a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to get involved. Even if you do not read music or play music, you can count to three. Find some great songs in 3/4, put them on, and try to find the beat, now count. 1, 2, 3—1,2,3, etc. Maybe teach your kids the waltz!

Fun with Multiple Instruments

One of the advantages of having faculty that know and teach multiple instruments is the flexibility to meet those needs. Are you learning an instrument and would like to learn another? Learning multiple instruments usually becomes a little easier with each new instrument, and it will always help you learn to love and appreciate music on a new level. All but two of our faculty teach piano. At least five our faculty teach multiple instruments. Looking to learn? Call or drop us a line today and start the journey!

Scales are the Key to Music

Scales are the key to music on so many levels. We take scales very seriously at TIA. The reason that we take scales so seriously is not just because of the scales themselves, although they can be a ton of fun, they are fascinating, and we think scales on their own are just a beautiful part of music. But beyond that, scales unlock so many mysteries of music and provide the means for traveling the journey of music on so many levels.

A Parent of a Piano Student with Mary-Elizabeth

“Our daughter’s first experience with piano was with the Tuned In Academy. After the initial joy of it wore off, our daughter went through a short season of really dreading piano lessons. If it wasn’t for the kindness of her teacher, Mary-Liz, I don’t know how long it would have taken for her to come out of that. She’s not at the point where she will sit down at the piano and play it for fun! We are super thankful for Mary-Liz and for TIA!”
